CHESS Community Bike Recycling Centre
A NEW clean, green bicycle recycling centre is up and running in Coffs Harbour, thanks to a great partnership between CHESS and Coffs Harbour City Council
The Community Bike Recycling Centre operates Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11am to 3pm. All CHESS clients are welcome to volunteer their time, learn some new skills and contribute to a great new community-based ‘green’ project.
Unwanted bicycles are collected by CHESS and taken to the Bike Recycling Centre where they are repaired and refurbished by clients under the supervision of experienced bike mechanic mentors. Once the bicycles are repaired and checked to an acceptable standard, they are offered for a nominal sum of money to local targeted groups such as charities and schools.
The project has been assisted by the New South Wales Government, through its Climate Action Grants Program and endorsed by the Coffs Harbour City Council Bicycle Users Committee. It has also been supported with technical advice and in-kind contributions from local bike shops.
The aims of the program are:
- To promote cycling as a cheap, efficient, healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport
- To restore second hand bicycles for use by targeted groups such as charities and schools.
- To provide training for CHESS clients
Where possible, second hand parts will be used, and only clients of CHESS are able to volunteer at the Centre… just another great benefit of being a client!
