Overview of CHESS

Back in 1993 CHESS began its operations as a small specialised employment service for people with a mental illness. It is now a medium sized community based not for profit NGO (non-government organisation) delivering a diverse range of socially inclusive programmes that focuses on holistic rehabilitation of disadvantaged groups in the community, including those with mental illness. These programmes include Personal Helpers and Mentor’s Program (PHaMs), Disability Employment Services (DES), CHESS Farm, Innovation Farm, Men’s Shed, Bike Recycling Project, Community Garden and the Growers Market Stall.

While employment is a key component of recovery, social inclusion and client driven outcomes are equally important. CHESS works collaboratively with program participants to address holistic needs for the full range of recovery aspects, including reducing social isolation and promoting community engagement, improving daily living skills and providing support to access housing, income security, education and community support services.

CHESS is committed to assisting participants regain their independence and achieve self reliance by supporting people to build on their strengths, increase their self reliance, access appropriate support and provide vocational and pre-vocational programmes. CHESS also provides outreach services in the community. All participants receive one-on-one assistance to overcome difficulties in engaging with the community, and obtaining and retaining employment.

CHESS supports clients in all facets of their lives so that they progress along a continuum of recovery to achieve social inclusion and independence. Through its strategically placed regional offices on the Mid North Coast, CHESS supports over 700 clients from Yamba to Macksville.
